CARE ASSISTANT

Responsible to: Registered Manager
To join together with other members of staff in order to provide the individual care required by each resident, making sure that they retain as much of their dignity and individuality as possible.
To assist in providing a happy and caring atmosphere and be involved in the general activities of the Home.
Main Responsibilities:
- Help residents who need assistance with washing and toileting, dressing and undressing.
- Help residents who have limited mobility or physical disabilities, making the best use of aids provided.
- Assist in the control of incontinence, providing comfort with dignity.
- Care for residents who are temporarily unwell.
- Help care for residents who are dying.
- Assist in giving stimulation to residents by talking to them and by helping them continue with hobbies and activities in the Home.
- Answer emergency bells, the door and the telephone.
- Make visitors welcome and offer refreshments and any assistance they may require.
- Read and write reports.
- Assist with updating personal care plans and ensure that records are written concisely, appropriately and accurately, including monthly weights and recording all professional visits etc.
- Take part in staff and residents meetings and attend training sessions when requested. Approach the management to ensure formal supervision and appraisals are carried out.
- Make and change beds. Tidy rooms and do light cleaning. Empty and clean commodes.
- Feed residents who need help. Lay tables and trays, serve meals, wash up, prepare light meals, clear and tidy dining room.
- Check residents clothing and any that needs mending give to laundry staff for repair.
- Observe the Home Health and Safety Policy at all times.
- Carry out duties with regard to Home Fire Regulations policy.
- Administer drugs according to the home's policy, if trained to do so.

Purpose of Position:
1. To assist in the planning of interesting menus providing a balanced nutritious diet, making the best use of fresh foods, as available.
2. To prepare, cook and serve meals, as appropriate.
3. To provide special diets where necessary, as well as taking into account the preferences of individual residents.
4. To be responsible for the clearing and washing up after meals and the overall cleaning of the kitchen, to include a thorough cleaning according to the cleaning plan and Safer food better business recommendations.
5. To maintain a record of food supplies and list requirements where requested. To order and ensure adequate food supplies for pre-planned menus.
6. To maintain statutory health and safety standards in kitchen and dining areas. To be up to date with the relevant food & hygiene certificate.
7. To have full knowledge of the Home's fire procedures.
8. To attend staff meetings and training sessions when required.
9. To ensure that the preparation, cooking and serving of food meet the required standards & all staff members who prepare foods receive the correct training. Monitor the Safer food better business documentation ensuring all staff members receive training and are aware of standards & the importance of documenting open & closing checks.
10. Maintain kitchen equipment, report any breakages to allow replacement.
